Important Chemistry Practical Guidelines
- Confidentiality is Key: Great care must be taken to ensure that the information below does not reach candidates before the exam.
- Essential Apparatus: Each candidate must have the following:
- One 50.0 cm³ burette
- One pipette (20.0 cm³ or 25.0 cm³ – all candidates must use the same volume)
- Standard titration apparatus
- Qualitative analysis tools and reagents such as:
- NaOH (dilute), HCl (dilute), HNO₃ (dilute), AgNO₃ solution
- BaCl₂ solution, aqueous ammonia, lime water
- Litmus papers (red & blue), H₂SO₄ (dilute), Fehling’s solution A & B
- Spatula, filtration apparatus, one beaker, one boiling tube, four test tubes
- Methyl orange and phenolphthalein indicators
- Glass rod, wash bottle (distilled/deionized water), burning splint
- Watch glass, Bunsen burner/source of heat, droppers
- Calculator/mathematical table
- Specimen Supply: Each candidate (serial number 'n') should receive:
- 150 cm³ of solution ‘An’: 8.6 cm³ of concentrated HCl per dm³
- 150 cm³ of solution ‘Bn’: 8.0 g of NaHCO₃ per dm³
- One spatulaful of ‘Cn’: a 1:1 uniform mix of CuSO₄ and glucose
- Additional Materials: May be provided if needed.
- Supervisors’ Duty: Record actual concentrations of ‘A’ and ‘B’ on the Supervisor’s Report. Candidates assume concentrations are as in the exam paper.
- No Substitution Allowed: Use only substances/solutions specified in the exam instruction.
Candidate Arrangement & Numbering
- All lab places should be numbered serially based on index numbers.
- Each specimen’s number should match the candidate’s serial number.
- Do not reassign numbers of absent candidates.
- If there are multiple sets, serial numbers must continue without repetition.
- Ensure candidates write both their serial and index numbers on the answer booklets.
